DAY 15: ISAIS Isolation

As we close the chapter of the archives, another one opens its door for us to enter into, the ISAIS. In my opinion, all of the students are familiar with this section as this is the place most visited. As a library user, I always enjoyed my time at this section because I get to use the computer or just the internet, I can also charge my phone and even browse through a couple of books. Generally, this area is a lot of fun for me.  But now that I am about to work here, my perspective is about to turn upside down.

JULY 07, 2017 - THURSDAY

Our group headed to the ISAIS before the clock strikes 8AM. It was comforting to see Ma'am Chiarra as she was the only person that I recognize from all of the workers of this section. She gave us a quick rundown of how things are going to go in this section. Let me just tell you that after being given the list of requirements, my head seemed to hurt as I read through all of them. I calmed myself and hoped that it would be Monday already, the last day of our shift.

Since Ma'am Chiarra wouldn't be able to orient us to every task in this section, she called for reinforcements. It came in the form of Sir Elmer and Tony but even they were a bit confused as to how to do the tasks. We were required to answer queries, catalog and encode titles. The problem was with cataloging because the materials were in electronic form and they were only in one computer and that computer doesn't have an internet connection which means what we had to do was use a different computer and come back to that one to check the resource, a bit tedious but hey, what can we do about it?

Edward decided to catalog first, I opted to encode and Tricia was going to answer queries. Because of the mishap, we began with our tasks two hours after 8AM. I sat down and began encoding on the computer. For this task, we are supposed to copy information from the iLib and transfer it to the LibraryThing website. We had a quote of 50 titles which is why I need to start with my work.

By lunchtime, even though my fingers were hurting from typing frequently, I managed to encode 32 titles. I didn't had a lot to do anyway which is why after having a quick snack I resumed working 30 minutes after in order to finish the task early. Before 2PM, I was able to finish all 50 as well as double-check it. Edward and I decided to switch stations as we were both done with the first task.

My first catalogs were horrendous as I was struggling with what tags to add particularly in the case of electronic resources, I definitely need to review some of those tomorrow. However, after a while, I got used to the tags commonly used and I was able to work comfortably after. By the end of the shift, I managed to catalog 7 e-books.

Cataloging Always Comes Back To Haunt You

By the way, I forgot to tell you that we also have a homework for the ISAIS. Even though it is exhausting to work on something after working for eight hours straight, I shall persevere and finish them within the deadlines.

Let's just hope I keep my promises.
